I’m Jaxx, a professional photographer and makeup artist specializing in personal branding photography and beauty makeup for TV, commercials, and bridal, based in the greater New York metro area. This month’s topic is “some universe will create us again.” To me, this concept directly relates to the transformation, love, trust, and confidence that rebuilds and reinvents us and our brands.

In my career, I’ve seen countless individuals undergo profound transformations— both personally and professionally. Like a universe constantly evolving, we are perpetually in a state of rebirth and reinvention, embracing new versions of ourselves throughout our lives. It’s a comforting thought: when life throws chaos our way, we can muster the power to recreate ourselves.

True beauty is so much more than skin deep. It radiates from within, fueled by confidence, acts of service, and genuine kindness. My camera and brushes are tools to simply enhance, but never mask, the inner glow you already naturally possess. Embracing who YOU are is paramount! Recognize and hone in on your strengths. Just as stars need darkness to shine, your perceived insecurities and self-proclaimed “flaws” add depth and dimension to your story. Embrace them as parts of a beautiful whole. We are often way too hard on ourselves and, I’m sure, could all benefit from some grace. Take pride in who you were, are, and will be. It’s what makes you, you.

Love is the energy that fuels any transformation. By showing yourself kindness and compassion, you allow your true essence to shine through. Invest in a form of self-care that is meaningful to you, whether through a customized and ritualistic skincare routine, exercise plan for needed dopamine boosts, taking up a hobby that brings you joy, making time to see loved ones, or simply affirming your own worth. Practicing these acts magnify your inner light and help forge the strength to continue moving toward your goal.

In my years of working with various clients and being a consumer myself, I’ve learned that authenticity is irresistible. Your brand isn’t just what you do—it’s who you are. People buy YOU before they buy whatever you’re selling. By embracing your quirks, passions, and values, you invite others to connect deeply with you. As they say, “your vibe attracts your tribe.” When creating brand stories and marketing campaigns, lean firmly into your most authentic self.

If you’re on the fence about booking a photo session, keep in mind that photography captures so much more than an image—it captures a story, should evoke emotion, and encourage action. Who are you and why should your ideal client be paying attention? The goal is to reflect your journey and your aspirations. Tie this in with how your brand distinctively services your ideal client and you’ll be unstoppable!

When you’re on the hunt for a personal branding photographer, imagine you’re casting for your own movie. Before anything else, dive deep into their portfolio. You wouldn’t hire a comedy director for a horror film, right? Make sure their style and vibe align with yours. You’ll want to “click” with your photographer, too. Personalities meshing well or clashing horribly can make or break a photo session. Scheduling a discovery call first can be the easiest way to feel comfortable in your booking decision.

Next, think about the emotions you want your images to evoke to your audience. Are you going for fierce and fabulous or calm and contemplative? Knowing this will help you communicate your vision and ensure your photographer captures your essence. Remember, the right pictures aren’t just pretty snapshots; they’re transformative. They can take you from zero to hero in your industry, making that social media profile pop and your website wow. It’s not just about looking good, it’s about feeling powerful and ready to seize the day.

So, when you find that magical match, get ready to welcome a whole new level of personal and business success. After all, a picture is worth a thousand words, but the right one? Priceless.

Equally as important, is hiring an exceptional beauty team (makeup artist, hair stylist, and wardrobe stylist). I’ll focus on makeup, since that’s such a huge part of what I do. When hiring a makeup artist, finding the perfect fit is invaluable. Like with your photographer search, start by browsing their portfolio to ensure their work aligns with your aesthetic. Do you lean towards a natural glow or a bold glam? Their portfolio will show you what you need to know about their signature application techniques. Their personality should also click with yours. A makeup artist on a photo shoot can be your champion, someone who calms your nerves or amps up your excitement.

Before you book your makeup artist, gather inspiration pictures. It’s helpful to choose images of people with similar facial features to yours. This helps your artist see your vision clearly, making it easier to craft a look that’s uniquely you. There are many makeup artists out there, but finding the one that’s most qualified for your project is a game-changer. A great makeup artist (and full beauty team) ensures you not only look amazing, but feel amazing, too. Remember, makeup should never be about hiding who you are, but celebrating it! As I blend custom foundations for my clients or choose the perfect lip color for a special event, my aim is to elevate my client’s natural features, allowing their unique beauty to shine for the world to see. Whether you prefer a natural “no makeup” look, full glamour, or something in between, the proper artist will create an application specific to your needs. They won’t give you a cookie-cutter look!

Here’s a summary of tips for a transformative photoshoot (it could recreate YOUR universe):

  1. Research Your Photographer: It’s important be familiar with your photographer’s work before booking them. Everyone has different styles and you must vibe well to create the best images!
  2. Define Your Vision: What story do you wish to tell? Whether it’s confidence, vulnerability, joy, or otherwise, shape your session around this narrative.
  3. Professional Help: Hire a beauty team (makeup artist, hair stylist, and wardrobe expert), even if you don’t normally fuss with your look. They will elevate your style so you can put your best self forward!
  4. Embrace Serendipity: Sometimes, the unplanned shots become the defining ones. Trust yourself in the spontaneity of the moment.

Here’s to celebrating your transformation. As you navigate this journey of self-discovery, remember— I’m here with camera in one hand and brush in the other, eager to capture and celebrate the magnificent (re)creation that is YOU.
